RISD
“I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.” - John Steinbeck I have been a professor at RISD for over two decades, and have covered a wide range of courses in the Illustration Department to meet the changing needs of its students. My primary goal is to engage minds, elevate skills and inspire each of my students to find their true spirit. I believe in stepping back, stepping in and sometimes…bouncing up and down when a student makes a huge leap forward! My most recent courses include: What’s Your Story, Senior Portfolio, Color Works, PermaDeath: A Video Game Opera and a Turner Funded course, Monkey: A Kung Fu Puppet Opera. In addition to teaching, I’m also the Professional Development and Internship Advisor for Illustration. I work with students to assist in their search for internships and participate in career centric events and contacting companies to help the students navigate the next steps after graduation. I see it as a way to help students get a running start into the professional realm, to open a doorway and give guidance into an unknown world. My favorite part, is looping graduates back in to pay it forward, and help the latest flock find their wings! Courses taught/teaching: PermaDeath, What’s Your Story, Artistic License, Color Works, Master Affects, Electric Book, Illustration I, Illustration II, Illustration III, Characterization, The Portfolio, Mixed Media, Watercolor and The Picture Book.
